Telenor Denmark is deploying 660 LTE transmitters this year as it looks to improve connectivity across main transport routes and rural areas.
The operator currently covers 80 percent of the country with LTE and 95 percent with 3G. In population terms, LTE coverage is 94 percent but Telenor said it wants to ensure coverage is as widespread on LTE as it is on 3G by 2021.
It is the latest company to signal an end to its 3G network, with plans in place to switch it off within five years. The operator’s Norwegian arm said last year it was planning to do the same by 2020.
Last week the operator rolled out carrier aggregation to 430 of its towers in five major cities. Customers with compatible handsets can get data speeds of up to 300MBps. Data consumption across its network increased by 46 percent between January and October 2015, as customers increasingly streamed video on their handsets.
After becoming the first operator in Denmark to launch voice over LTE last year, the operator said it wanted to introduce Wi-Fi calling by the end of 2016. Its VoLTE service has improved call quality and reduced call set-up time to one second.
Peter Nødbak, Network Dirctor in Telenor Denmark, said: “It is great to be on the forefront of mobile network innovation. This has not always been the case, but we are there now and probably have been for some time by building on our successful network sharing with Telia in Denmark. In addition to introducing interesting features to our customers, VoLTE is important as the foundation for a data-centric future and Telenor Denmark being a technology leader in the years to come.”
Telenor Denmark CEO Jesper Hansen added: “Our customers in Denmark love 4G, they like the speed and the flexibility to use their favorite internet applications whenever and wherever they want. 4G helps them to benefit from the internet and make their day more efficient and fun. We want to enable the best possible internet experience for our customers with a strong network.”
