Telekom Austria holds first VoLTE calls using NFV

Telekom Austria has run VoLTE and VoWi-Fi calls using network function virtualisation in Macedonia.

The operator’s Vip subisidiary held the trial using a virtualised telephony application server running on a virtualised IMS environment supplied by Mavenir Systems. Vip also demonstrated Voice over Wireless LAN with Mavenir.

Telekom Austria said the test showed how virtual technology could make an operator more flexible and speed up the release of new products.

Further, it said the technology would allow it to cope with soaring data rates and release better quality services in future.

Nikola Ljushev, CEO and CTO, Vip operator, commented: “We are and will remain committed towards bringing new technologies to our customers, while constantly investing in improvements of our services and systems. I’m very pleased that we are among the first operators in the region successfully testing VoLTE. Thus we are contributing to the innovation path of Telekom Austria Group.”

The operator has been one of the main advocates of both NFV and SDN tech, with trials taking place across its various subsidiaries including Vipnet in Croatia, Mobiltel in Bulgaria and Vip mobile in Serbia.

Guenther Ottendorfer, CTO, Telekom Austria Group [pictured], said: “For Telekom Austria Group NFV technology is a paradigm shift which will have a major impact on the telecommunication industry globally within the next few years. The traditional IT silo world will no longer exist and the telecom landscape will be shaped differently. I am proud that the group is among the first operators worldwide to set these trends.”
