Free launches 5G in Paris at no additional cost

The disruptive French mobile brand says it will cover every arrondissement in the city within weeks.

Iliad, controlled by French billionaire Xavier Niel, has launched 5G service today in Paris under its Free brand.

It says it expects to receive authorisation for some 200 more sites in the next few weeks, so it will have a presence in every arrondissement.

Free claims to offer the only plan that includes 5G at no additional cost, with unlimited mobile Internet for Freebox subscribers.

With 7,044 active sites in France, Free says has the largest 5G mobile network in France, which covers both rural and urban areas.

France was one of the last countries in Europe to deploy 5G, having only held the spectrum auction in October 2020 after delays due to Covid-19 and some clashes between major stakeholders about how the process should be conducted.
