Huawei has revealed its first M2M module aimed at industrial applications.
The vendor said the quad-band MU709s would be used for large-scale remote control and monitoring, telematics, network gateways and 3G routers.
The Cat. 4 module contains a “new generation” chip from the vendor and combines eight LTE bands to deliver speeds of up to 150Mbps, Huawei claimed.
The vendor is offering the unit in two models, including a dual-band version for the European market and a tri-band model for Latin America. Both versions support quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM protocols and offer functions including jamming detection, HTTP and eCall support.
Huawai claimed the “complete” set of software support meant the module could easily be integrated “into any kind of application” within industrial M2M.
The module launch marks another step into the IoT market for Huawei, an area the China-based vendor has expressed a growing interest in.
Last September it purchased UK-based Neul, a company specialising in the creation of chipsets, base stations and cloud platforms for M2M/ IoT use.
Huawei said the acquisition would help it expand further into the IoT sector “under a variety of applications” by utilising white space spectrum based on Neul’s Weightless standard.
A report from Infonetics last month forecast the mobile M2M module market to treble to €3.8 billion within the next three years, spurred by an increase in connected car deployments and smart grid initiatives.
Significant investments in the technology in China sees Asia-Pac as the most rapidly-growing M2M market at present, Infonetics claimed.
