Finland’s government previously insisted operators must run 2G networks until the end of 2033
Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (Liikenne- ja viestintaministerio, MoTC) has announced that operators can cease running 2G networks at the end of 2029. Previously the government had said operators must run them until the end of 2033, but changed the licensing terms in line with recommendations after a review by the Ministry.
The Ministry explained that the 900MHz/1800MHz licences granted to DNA Finland, Elisa and Telia Finland obliged them to offer 2G voice and data services to 99% of the population of mainland Finland.
Now, although the deadline for the shutdown has been brought forward, operators must give the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency ample notice of their plans to close 2G networks as there is a large number of meters and control devices that rely on 2G.
They include units that monitor and regulate electricity and water infrastructure, hence the Ministry wants to ensure a smooth transition to newer tech for these key services.
