Elisa debuts cloud-based VoLTE, VoWi-Fi in Finland

Elisa has launched Finland’s first cloud-based VoLTE and voice over Wi-Fi services in a rollout led by Nokia.

The operator used Nokia’s voice core technology, which comprises its cloud-based IMS core, Telecom Application Server, Open Border Gateway and Traffic for VoLTE products, on the deployment.

The Finnish vendor also handled planning, implementation, deployment, testing, acceptance and support services.

Elisa said the project has allowed it to boost the quality of its voice services, even deep in buildings or in remote parts of the country.

Sami Komulainen, Vice President, Mobile Network Services of Elisa said: “The newly launched Wi-Fi and 4G calling capability is a great extension to our existing mobile communication services. Mobile reception problems in low-energy houses and old buildings with thick walls are quite typical.

“Taking new technologies into use helps us to provide our customers with better quality and seamless coverage even in the most challenging places.”

Tommi Uitto, Head of Mobile Networks Global Product Sales at Nokia, said: “By leveraging our technology and services expertise we are able to provide a solution that will allow Elisa’s customers to benefit from high quality voice calls with faster set-up times as well as a longer battery life compared to using other OTT voice app services.”

Earlier this week, Elisa was one of three winners in the 700MHz spectrum auction, spending €66 million for two paired 5MHz blocks.

Other recent operators to embark on voice over LTE projects are T-Mobile Polska, Proximus in Belgium, and Telia in Norway.
