Diameter signalling control market doubles in 2013

Soaring mobile device traffic and takeover activity has led the Diameter signalling controller market’s sales to more than double during the past 12 months, according to new research.

Infonetics Research is predicting the global market will increase at a 54 percent compound annual growth rate through 2018.

The research firm said that expected growth in the sector has led to vendors from a range of backgrounds to increasingly target the market, including hardware and software companies such as Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, and Oracle, traditional signalling vendors such as Ulticom, pure play businesses like Diametriq, IP experts like F5 and vendors in the policy and control space such as Amdocs, Comptel and Openet.

The top use for Diameter signalling control continues to be centralised routing but roaming through Diameter Edge Agent is a close second followed by policy and charging rules function.

The research firm is predicting that key areas of product development in the sector during the next 12 months include virtualisation and further integration of interworking function.

While North America traditionally dominated the market, with an 80 percent market share in 2011, the spread of 4G LTE has caused both the Asia Pacific and EMEA markets to grow their share.

Diane Myers, Principal Analyst for VoIP, UC and IMS at Infonetics Research, said: “The Diameter signaling control market is still relatively new, but in 2013 it matured through the success of a broader range of vendors and strong growth worldwide, with revenue more than doubling over the previous year.

“The vendor landscape continues to shift with acquisitions and new entrants. Oracle, via its acquisition of Tekelec and Acme Packet, is the Diameter signaling control market leader in 2013, followed very closely by F5 and Huawei. Ericsson and Huawei have made significant pushes into the Diameter space and should be viewed as formidable threats. As exploding traffic from mobile devices, smartphones, and machines further vexes mobile operators, we expect competition in the Diameter signaling controller market to intensify in 2014.”
