CTO of the Year 2016InternetofThings

The Mobile Europe CTO of the Year award recognises the central role Chief Technology Officers play in a modern operator and how they prepare the company for the future. The award celebrates those driving innovation and displaying an agenda-setting vision that places his or her company at the forefront of the telecoms industry.

The winning executive will have demonstrated operational excellence, a penchant for innovation and shown how he or she is an agenda-setting CTO. They will also have to show how their crucial technology strategy decision-making has translated into the wider company’s success, from number of LTE subscriptions to low levels of churn.

The nominated CTOs will be pared down to a shortlist, with a winner chosen by a panel of independent industry experts.

The winner will be announced at the CTO of the Year Awards dinner on Wednesday 6th April at the Andaz Hotel in London, with an interview featuring in the April/May edition of Mobile Europe magazine.

CTO of the Year 2015 – Fotis Karonis, EE

EE’s Fotis Karonis was the unanimous choice among the judging panel for 2015’s prize, with the UK operator’s aggressively successful LTE strategy at the heart of the win.

Karonis’s technological zeal and pioneering spirit was also noted by the judges. He was an advocate of a wide range of innovative technology within the company, experimenting with carrier aggregation, LTE broadcast, Wi-Fi Calling and Voice over LTE.

The judges felt EE would not have had its reputation and success without the technological success of Karonis and his team. Its success could be summed up by how EE quickly became Europe’s biggest LTE player, despite launching several years after its continental counterparts.

Karonis beat Bouygues Telecom’s Yves Legrand, Telekom Austria Group’s Gunther Ottendorfer and Telekom Deutschland’s Bruno Jacobfeuerborn to clinch the award.

Fotis Karonis says, “It’s an honour when experts from the industry recognise and compliment achievements and hard work, and when I saw the other CTOs that I was up against for this prestigious award I was absolutely delighted. Innovation is at the fore in the European mobile sector, so this award is only going to become more and more important as it recognises the great work being done by technology teams across the continent.”

CTO of the Year 2014 – Enrique Blanco, Telefónica

Telefónica’s Enrique Blanco beat four peers to win the first CTO of the Year award, after judges hailed his customer focussed approach to technology.

Blanco was presented with the award at the Mobile World Congress and dedicated the win to his team at the operator. He said at the time that it was vital that industry chief technical officers work with the understanding that their business is customer based, rather than technology based.

Blanco won the award, beating rivals from Bouygues Telecom, EE, KPN and Telenor Norway, because of a range of different initiatives during 2013, including Universal Wi-Fi, Latch and VoLTE to 3G call handover.

Judges said Blanco played an integral role in improving the network’s quality, innovating and increasing the customer experience. They hailed his work in driving forward the network and services and said he was a high-profile figure among his peers, with many other operators following in his footsteps.
