China Telecom has become the first operator to deploy Ericsson’s Radio Dot System in the country as it looks to improve indoor coverage and boost capacity.
The operator has deployed the vendor’s LTE small cells product in two venues the Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces of China in order to tackle “explosive” traffic growth through the use of carrier aggregation.
China Telecom is using Ericsson’s Radio Dot System to combine 20MHz of spectrum from the 1.8GHz and 2.1GHz frequency bands.
This has enabled speeds of up to 300Mbps and helped improved the coverage and performance of China Telecom’s network indoors, Ericsson said.
The system achieves this by limiting single leaks and providing better switching between the small cells and the macro network, the vendor explained.

According to Ericsson, mobile data traffic generated indoors now accounts for approximately 70 percent of total mobile data traffic, making small cell systems “of vital significance” toward improving coverage.
Last month, MTS deployed Ericsson’s Radio Dot System in a shopping centre and Vodafone UK announced it is trialling the tech.
The vendor launched the technology in September last year.
Chris Houghton, Head of Region North East Asia at Ericsson, said: “We have received very good feedback from China Telecom on the Ericsson Radio Dot System’s excellent performance, ease of deployment and cost-efficiency.”
