BlackBerry security solution to sandbox apps for iOS, Android

BlackBerry has taken its mobile sandboxing expertise and decided to embrace rival mobile operating systems with the launch of a new security solution.

The Secure Work Space for iOS and Android is a new feature that comes with the BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10.

Designed for enterprises with BYOD concerns, the solution separates work from personal apps and data on the Apple iOS and Google Android operating systems.

Users of the solution get an integrated email system with attachment viewing, calendar, contacts, document editing capabilities using Documents To Go, and a secure browser, which can access corporate intranets.

Corporate data is separated within the Secure Work Space container, enabling users to use the usual mobile phone apps together with any other apps selected by the enterprise.

“Mobility is fundamentally transforming how we live and work. As our dependency on mobile solutions grows, and as a greater variety of mobile devices enter the workplace, the need for solutions to manage and secure these devices has never been greater,” said David J Smith, EVP, Enterprise Mobile Computing at BlackBerry.

“In today’s ‘bring your own device world’, Secure Work Space is a differentiated solution that brings key elements of the BlackBerry security platform and mobile device management to iOS and Android devices.”

In March, BlackBerry had to deny claims that BB10 had failed to gain security clearance from the UK government over data leak fears.

BlackBerry is also partnering with app developers to power business collaboration in the cloud, such as Box.

“Content sits at the centre of every successful business and Box ensures that today’s mobile enterprise can securely access their information from any device, in any location and at any time,” said Whitney Bouck, Senior Vice President & GM, Enterprise at Box.
