Amdocs launches SON solution

Amdocs has launched a Self Optimizing Networks (SON) solution, aimed at helping operators to optimise their RAN resources.

The product, which supports 2G and 3G services as well as 4G LTE, claims to enable operators to manage increasingly complex heterogeneous networks and maximise capacity utilisation, as well as improving network performance and customer experience.

Four mobile service providers in Latin America are deploying the new solution, including TIM Brasil, which will use it in select Brazilian cities hosting World Cup football games this summer to deliver an improved customer experience. It then plans to roll out the solution to the whole country.

Tim McElligott, Senior Consulting Analyst at Stratecast, said: “Automating the process is an important component for optimising the network, and by extending the customer experience into the network, as Amdocs has done with its SON solution, operators can maximise network value.”

Rebecca Prudhomme, Vice-President of Product and Solutions Marketing at Amdocs, said the launch reflected the vendor’s expanded focus on the network software domain.

The vendor has been increasing its grip over the mobile network optimisation market with two recent acquisitions.

In September, it acquired UK-based Actix, which is a provider of software for mobile network optimisation. Two months later, it bought network management and SON provider Celcite Management Solutions.

However, Amdocs is not the only vendor to have identified the market potential. JDSU’s purchase of Arieso and Cisco’s buyout of Intucell are all recent examples of major vendors trying to get a foothold in SON.
