Alcatel-Lucent upgrades microwave backhaul with ETSI optimisation

Alcatel-Lucent has extended its portfolio of packet microwave solutions with a new ETSI-optimised system that claims to offer an eight-fold increase in capacity in a third of the footprint over long distances.

The 9500 MPR long-haul system builds on the vendor’s 9500 MPR solution, which augments IP/MPLS and optical transport networks by meeting demand for network connectivity where fibre is too difficult or costly to deploy.

ETSI-optimised to meet deployment requirements for 4G LTE in Europe and other continents, A-L said the new solution offers a smooth transition from TDM and hybrid microwave networks by providing a path to 10 GBPS capacity between microwave towers.

This enables operators to meet the demand for high-bandwidth, long-haul connectivity needed in both traditional and IP-based services, including IP video and 4G LTE, according to the vendor.

“This is an exciting launch… as service providers in Europe ramp-up their LTE network roll-outs, the ability to support much greater capacity in a smaller footprint will be key as it has a positive impact on site planning, costs and efficiency,” said Sky Light Research founder Emmy Johnson.

“With the addition of our ETSI-optimised 9500 MPR long-haul system, we will help operators around the world be more competitive by enabling the efficient and reliable delivery of more microwave capacity,” commented Francois Allain, General Manager, Alcatel-Lucent Wireless Transmission Business, EMEA.

According to Infonetics Research, despite the increase of fibre, microwave maintained its lead as the largest spending segment in 2012 and is expected to contribute to 56 percent of mobile backhaul revenue by 2017.
