Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson test 4G LTE broadcast tech

Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson have tested the latest 4G LTE broadcast technology during the recent NFL Superbowl and Australia versus England T20 cricket match.

A-L worked with Verizon Wireless by supplying LTE Multicast equipment for a tech tent the US operator operated during the Superbowl to demonstrate interactive and 4G LTE technology.

4G LTE Multicast uses spectrum resources to allow a single copy of content to be sent to multiple users, rather than multiple copies of the same content to be sent to numerous users.

The technology is based on the evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) standards.

According to A-L, LTE Multicast provides a new opportunity for content owners to develop a customised viewing experience for a mass audience.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Telstra held a demonstration of Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast software. Live coverage, highlights and statistics were broadcast to participants via a custom built app and LTE-Broadcast enabled device.

Similar to the Alcatel-Lucent test, a single stream of content was broadcast to multiple users, with the quality no longer dependent on the number of users in the cell area.

HÃ¥kan Eriksson, head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, said: “LTE Broadcast provides a great opportunity for mobile operators to drive new revenue streams for premium entertainment video services over LTE and meet increasing consumer demand for exceptional quality video experience. Together with leading industry partners in standardisation and ecosystem development, we will ready commercial deployment for the mass market, optimising the use of existing spectrum and networks.”
