Alcatel-Lucent launches new solution to switch voice to IP

Alcatel-Lucent has launched a new solution that helps operators shift existing voice services from public switched telephone network (PSTN) tech to all-IP infrastructure.

PSTN Smart Transform is aimed at operators seeking to move away from ageing, inefficient voice infrastructure. It provides consulting and design to help operators make the change to ultra-broadband, as well as planning and migration services.

The France-based vendor claimed it can offer up to 50 percent lower costs compared to traditional IP migration approaches, an outage time of 20 seconds during migration, compared to rivalsโ€™ 20 minutes, and twice as fast time to market.

According to Ovum Analyst Kamalini Ganguly, operators are struggling with PSTN transformation. She said: โ€œWhile the benefits of an IP network are strong; operators are concerned that the transformation process will disrupt high-margin revenue services.โ€

Federico Guillรฉn, President of Fixed Networks at Alcatel-Lucent, said: โ€œPSTN Smart Transform offers communications service providers with a comprehensive, low-risk way to accelerate the migration of their legacy voice users to an all-IP infrastructure.

โ€œBy using PSTN Smart Transform, service providers can reap the benefits of a PSTN transformation more quickly to gain greater operational efficiencies and create more opportunities for revenue generation.

โ€œIn fact, when a PSTN migration is carefully planned in tandem with an ultra-broadband deployment, the positive impact from operational savings can be reallocated to other parts of the business or used to further fuel the network transformation.โ€
