Tech Mahindra buys Sony’s Swedish lab to extend testing presence to Europe

Outsourcing and consultancy firm Tech Mahindra has acquired the Type Approval Lab in Lund, Sweden, in a bid to expand its device testing presence into Europe.

Formerly part of Sony Mobile’s internal test function, the lab will provide end-to-end testing solutions which focus on the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), relative standard error (RSE), over the air (OTA), specific absorbtion rate (SAR) and radio frequency (RF) test requirements of OEMs for global markets.

Tech Mahindra, together with its subsidiary CanvasM Technology, currently has test labs in India and the US and has certified over 800 devices so far, but this will be the company’s first in Europe.

The CanvasM test lab in India has been accredited by a top tier telco in the US for LTE testing, making it the only lab outside the US and the second lab in the world to receive such certification.

In addition to testing devices to work on GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA and HSPA+ networks, the new lab will also enable LTE testing and short-rage radio frequencies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

“This acquisition aligns perfectly with our vision to become the world’s number one lab with complete and customisable test solutions for ODMs and platform vendors,” said CanvasM’s CTO Sirisha Voruganti.

“The Lund facility will now provide us a strategic Lab presence for EMEA region and for our customers looking to launch their products in EU and rest of the world. We look forward to the exciting test engineering competencies and consulting abilities the lab resources will bring to Tech Mahindra’s customers.”
