Telia rolls out smart logistics for trucking company

Telia Company has enabled connectivity for driverless trucks at a logistics company.

The operator worked with Ericsson and transport company Einride to set up the network at logistics company DB Schenkerโ€™s storage area in Jรถnkรถping, Sweden.

Einrideโ€™s electric and autonomous T-pods are being used to transport goods. Einride said that its system could replace more than 60 percent of existing transport technology with a sustainable alternative.

Mats Lundbรคck, Chief Technology Officer, Telia Sweden, said: โ€œWe are constructing a powerful ecosystem, together with our partners, to take advantage of the possibilities of 5G.

โ€œIt is a good example of how technology can create new business opportunities, save costs and also contribute to a more sustainable world. We have an exciting time in front of us.โ€

Robert Falck, CEO and founder of Einride, added: โ€œEinrideโ€™s goal is to lead a sustainable transformation of the freight transport sector. And while we do this, security must remain our highest priority.

โ€œ5G offers the connectivity and reliability required to safely launch T-pods on public roads, which, in turn, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and completely eliminate nitrogen oxides.โ€

Yesterday O2 said it was deploying small cells between Birmingham and Coventry to trial connected car technology.

Last month, TIM held a driverless car demonstration in two city squares in Turin. It described them as the โ€œcrowning jewelโ€ of a wider 5G showcase.

The operator is readying a Smart Road project, which will test self-driving cars on a larger scale.
