Vodafone and Continental team up to drive internet of tyres

Vodafone has teamed up with automotive manufacturer Continental to create a connected monitoring solution for truck tyres.

The ContiConnect system will use Vodafone’s network and Continental’s sensors to communicate data such as tyre temperature and pressure data from a vehicle fleet.

Using SMS and email, the sensors send the data to a central web portal operated by the fleet manager, which the latter can use to plan tyre changes and maintenance.

The system can also send an alert if any of the values are critical.

Vodafone said the system would help to improve the operational performance and lifespan of a fleet’s tyres.

The system has already been trialled in the United States, with launches in European markets to follow in 2018 and 2019.

Vodafone’s IoT Director Stefano Gestaut said: “This is a great example of how IoT can make real world differences in so many unexpected places. This ensures that truck drivers experience fewer tyre-related breakdowns and accidents – making the roads a safer place to be for every vehicle user.”

Michael Neuheisel, Continental‘s Commercial Vehicle Tyre Division Head of Digital Solutions, said: “ContiConnect provides commercial vehicle fleet operators such as haulage, bus or construction companies with greater transparency in their fleet management activities and allows them to digitally monitor their vehicles’ tyres in real-time. The recorded data helps fleet managers to maximise vehicle uptime and reduce maintenance costs and fuel.”
